The chart is based on the sounds of the different initial and final parts and not on the spelling. Especially note the following:

  • There are three different final ' i ' - sounds, depending on which initial it occurs together with.
  • The final sound spelled ' ü ' after initial ' n ' and ' l ' is spelled ' u ' without dots after initial ' x ', ' j ' and ' q ' and when it is without initial sound, where it is spelled ' yu '.
  • When the sounds ' i ' and ' u ' occur by them selves they are spelled ' yi ' and ' wu '.
  • In other syllables where the ' i '- and the ' u '- sounds are without initial they are spelled ' y ' and ' w ' respectively.
  • There are three finals that does not take initial: ' er ', ' wen ' and ' weng '.
